How to calculate engagement rate

Engagement rate, two ways
RateFormulaUse it for
By followers
(likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100
Comparing accounts, answering a brand, benchmark reports
By views
(likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ views × 100
Judging one video, since most TikTok views come from non-followers

Worked example, the calculator's starting numbers: a TikTok post on a 12,000-follower account with 18,000 views, 1,100 likes, 45 comments, 60 shares and 90 favorites has 1,295 interactions. That's 11% by followers and 7.2% by views.

For an average, add up several posts' numbers and divide by how many there are (the calculator does it when you type the post count). Ten recent posts smooth out one viral video or one flop.

Rival IQ / Quid: 2026 Social Media Industry Benchmark Report (March 5, 2026), read October 24, 2026.

The report measures 150 companies chosen at random from each of 18 industries, as total interactions divided by follower count. These are brand accounts: they post often and have large followings, which pulls the rate down. Small creator accounts usually run higher, so treat the medians as a floor to beat. Published creator benchmarks by follower size disagree with each other by several times, so we don't quote one.

What is an engagement rate calculator?

An engagement rate calculator divides a post's likes, comments, shares and saves by your followers, or its views, to show how much people act on it. A 2026 benchmark of brand accounts puts the median at 2.01% on TikTok and 0.3% on Instagram.

How to use Engagement rate calculator

  1. 1

    Pick TikTok or Instagram

The fields change a little: TikTok shows views and favorites, Instagram shows views or accounts reached and saves.

  2. 2

    Type the post's numbers

Followers, then the post's views, likes, comments, shares and saves. For an average, add up your last ten posts and type 10 under posts.

  3. 3

    Read both rates

The rate by followers compares you with the benchmark; the rate by views says how the people who saw the post reacted. Copy the result or turn it into a video idea.

Engagement rate calculator FAQ

How do you calculate engagement rate?

Add a post's likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by your followers and multiply by 100. That's the rate by followers, the one benchmark reports use. Divide by the post's views instead to get the rate by views.

What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?

Rival IQ's 2026 benchmark put the median TikTok post at 2.01% of followers, across 150 brands in each of 18 industries (published March 5, 2026). Brands post often and have big followings, so a small creator account above that is normal; below it, test new hooks and formats.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

The same 2026 benchmark put the median Instagram post at 0.3% of followers, down from 0.36% the year before. Reels usually draw more interactions than photos, and small accounts usually run higher than brands.

Should I use followers or views?

Use followers to compare accounts or answer a brand that asks for your engagement rate. Use views to judge one video: on TikTok most views come from people who don't follow you, so the rate by views says more about the video itself.

Does this calculator save or send my numbers?

No. The math runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. There's no account to make and no limit.
