Monday to Wednesday, from early afternoon into the evening, is where three of the four studies overlap: Mon 2–9 p.m., Tue 1–8 p.m., Wed 12–9 p.m., in your audience's local time. Friday and the weekend are weak in Sprout Social and Buffer. Later, using older (2024) feed data, prefers posts published before dawn.

  • Buffer: Buffer pooled all post types (Reels, carousels, photos). It suggests testing evenings, about 6–11 p.m., for Reels.
  • Later: Later's data is from 2024 and is the outlier: very early posts may do well because they're live before people wake up. For Reels it found 12 a.m. best, and Monday the best day.

Buffer pooled Reels, carousels and photos from 9.6 million posts (January 2024 to December 2025) and ranks slots by median engagement rate. Its page says "Evening hours (6 p.m. to 11 p.m.) generate the strongest engagement on every weekday except Thursday" and that 6–11 a.m. is the weakest, apart from Thursday at 9 a.m. Later analysed feed posts and Reels separately and found 12 a.m. best for Reels. Hootsuite weighs reach as well as engagement, and Sprout Social counts total engagements.

Where do the Instagram studies agree, and where don't they?

  • Midweek beats the weekend: Sprout Social finds no peak hours from Friday to Sunday, Buffer rates Friday and Saturday lowest, and Hootsuite's best days for reach are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Afternoon into evening early in the week: Mon 2–9 p.m., Tue 1–8 p.m., Wed 12–9 p.m. each hold windows from Sprout Social, Buffer and Hootsuite.
  • Before dawn: Later's best results come from posts at 3–6 a.m., while Buffer lists 1–5 a.m. as the worst hours on any day.
  • Weekend evenings: Buffer's Saturday and Sunday peaks are 8–10 p.m.; Sprout Social has no peak hours at weekends.
  • Days with no overlap at all: Thursday and Saturday.

A meeting window counts each study once, however many of its hours fall inside. On Tuesday, for example, the afternoon window gathers Sprout Social's 1–7 p.m., Hootsuite's 3–7 p.m. and Buffer's 3, 5 and 7 p.m. slots, which is why it spans 1–8 p.m.

Best time to post on Instagram on Monday

On Mondays the studies meet at 2–9 p.m. (3 of 4), in your audience's local time. Sprout Social (2–4 p.m.), Hootsuite (3–9 p.m.) and Buffer (6–8 p.m.) chain into one long afternoon and evening; Later rates Monday its best day, at 5 a.m.

  • Sprout Social: 2–4 p.m.
  • Buffer: 7 p.m., then 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
  • Hootsuite: 3–9 p.m.
  • Later: 5 a.m. (11 p.m. also strong)

Best time to post on Instagram on Tuesday

On Tuesdays the studies meet at 5–8 a.m. (2 of 4) and 1–8 p.m. (3 of 4), in your audience's local time. Tuesday is the only day with two meeting windows: early morning (Later and Hootsuite) and 1–8 p.m. (the other three).

  • Sprout Social: 1–7 p.m.
  • Buffer: 7 p.m., then 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Hootsuite: 5–8 a.m. and 3–7 p.m.
  • Later: 5 a.m.

Best time to post on Instagram on Wednesday

On Wednesdays the studies meet at 12–9 p.m. (3 of 4), in your audience's local time. Wednesday is Buffer's best day and has Sprout Social's widest window, 12–9 p.m.

  • Sprout Social: 12–9 p.m., and 11 p.m.
  • Buffer: 12 p.m., then 6 p.m. and 8 a.m.
  • Hootsuite: 5 p.m.
  • Later: 3 a.m. (strong until 5 a.m.)

Best time to post on Instagram on Thursday

The studies don't agree on Thursdays: no two of them name times that meet. Thursday splits: Buffer and Later lean early morning, Sprout Social midday and Hootsuite late afternoon, and none of them touch.

  • Sprout Social: 12–2 p.m.
  • Buffer: 9 a.m., then 8 a.m. and 7 a.m.
  • Hootsuite: 4–5 p.m.
  • Later: 4 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Best time to post on Instagram on Friday

On Fridays the studies meet at 3–7 a.m. (2 of 4), in your audience's local time. Friday is weak in Sprout Social (no peak hours) and Buffer (one of its two worst days); only Later and Buffer's third pick meet, before 7 a.m.

  • Sprout Social: No peak hours; avoid 3–7 a.m.
  • Buffer: 10 p.m., then 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Hootsuite: Around 4 p.m.
  • Later: 3–6 a.m. (its recap says 3–5 a.m.)

Best time to post on Instagram on Saturday

The studies don't agree on Saturdays: no two of them name times that meet. Saturday is Sprout Social's lowest day and no two studies meet; Buffer's Saturday hours are late, 8–10 p.m.

  • Sprout Social: No peak hours; lowest day of the week
  • Buffer: 9 p.m., then 10 p.m. and 8 p.m.
  • Hootsuite: 11 a.m. and around 5 p.m.
  • Later: 5 a.m.

Best time to post on Instagram on Sunday

On Sundays the studies meet at 8 p.m.–12 a.m. (2 of 4), in your audience's local time. Sunday's only overlap is late evening, Buffer's 8–10 p.m. running into Later's 11 p.m.; Hootsuite prefers 12–3 p.m.

  • Sprout Social: No peak hours; one of the worst days
  • Buffer: 9 p.m., then 10 p.m. and 8 p.m.
  • Hootsuite: 12–3 p.m.
  • Later: 12 a.m., 5 a.m. and 11 p.m.

The two studies point opposite ways for shops. Sprout Social's retail row is midday on weekdays, while Hootsuite's page says morning posts "perform best for industries like consumer goods, retail, marketing, and media".

What does Instagram itself say about timing?

  • Adam Mosseri's ranking explainer (May 31, 2023) lists "when it was posted" among the Feed signals. For Reels it says "the majority of what you see is from accounts you don't follow", so a follower activity chart tells you less about a Reel than about a feed post.
  • Trial reels go to non-followers first. Instagram says engagement numbers show "approximately 24 hours" after you share one, and it can share the reel with followers automatically if it does well on views "within the first 72 hours" (Instagram for Creators, December 10, 2024).
  • Reels up to 3 minutes can be recommended to non-followers, up from 90 seconds (Instagram for Creators, January 21, 2025).

Checked October 14, 2026.

How do you see when your Instagram followers are online?

  1. Insights work on any public account, personal or professional (Instagram Help Center). On instagram.com, choose Dashboard, then Insights under For professionals (or Your dashboard on a personal account).
  2. Open Total followers. Instagram shows it "when you have at least 100 followers", and it includes the "Times they're most active on Instagram" (About Instagram insights).
  3. Insights go back 90 days at most, so note your most active hours each month if you want to compare seasons.
  4. For Reels, compare reach on your own Reels at the same age, since most of their viewers don't follow you.

Instagram tips for UGC creators

  • Test a hook as a trial reel first: non-followers see it, and the numbers come back in about a day.
  • If a brand reposts your Reel or runs it as an ad, its audience and schedule apply, so ask where its buyers are before you set your audience zone.
  • Mosseri's explainer says Reels ranking aims to show fewer reels "that have already been posted on Instagram". A deleted and re-uploaded copy may count as one of those, so re-cut a slow Reel with a new hook instead (our reading of that line).

Have the caption ready before your slot: the Reels caption generator writes five, each inside Instagram's five-hashtag limit.

How to use Best time to post on Instagram

  1. 1

    Start on Instagram

The windows come from four studies: Sprout Social, Buffer, Hootsuite and Later. Later's 2024 data pulls toward very early mornings, so check the agreement number on each window.

  2. 2

    Set your followers' time zone

Instagram's Total followers insight shows where followers live once you have 100 of them. Pick that zone as your audience's and the tool converts every window to your time.

  3. 3

Plan feed posts and Reels separately

Most Reels viewers don't follow you, so the follower-based windows fit feed posts and carousels best. Compare reach on your own Reels at different hours.

FAQ

Best time to post on Instagram FAQ

What is the best time to post on Instagram?

Three of the four studies overlap Mon 2–9 p.m., Tue 1–8 p.m., Wed 12–9 p.m., in your audience's local time. Sprout Social's 2026 data says Tuesday 1–7 p.m. and Wednesday 12–9 p.m.; Buffer finds evenings (6–11 p.m.) strongest on every weekday except Thursday, when 9 a.m. leads.

What is the best day to post on Instagram?

Buffer names Wednesday, then Thursday and Tuesday. Sprout Social says Monday to Thursday. Hootsuite favours Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for reach. Friday and Saturday are weak in both Sprout Social and Buffer.

What is the best time to post Reels?

No study publishes a full by-day table for Reels. Buffer pooled all formats and suggests a Wednesday or Thursday evening for a single weekly Reel; Later's separate Reels analysis found 12 a.m. best. Instagram says most Reels viewers don't follow the account, so your own Reels' reach is the better guide.

Is 5 a.m. really the best time to post on Instagram?

That's Later's finding from 2024 feed posts, and it's the outlier: Buffer lists 1–5 a.m. as the worst hours on any day, and Sprout Social and Hootsuite point to afternoons. Test it before you rely on it.

Should I post on Instagram on Sunday?

Sprout Social calls Sunday one of the worst days and finds no peak hours. Buffer's Sunday picks are 8–10 p.m. and Hootsuite's 12–3 p.m. If you post on Sundays, try the evening and check your own reach.

How do I see when my Instagram followers are online?

Open Insights (Dashboard, then Insights on instagram.com) and tap Total followers. Instagram's help center says it shows follower trends, including the times they're most active, once you have at least 100 followers. Insights cover the last 90 days.
