Crop or fit a 16:9 clip into 9:16

Changing shape either crops the sides (fill) or adds bars (fit). Pick the clip's shape, or drop your own file.

Crop to fillKeeps 32% of the picture: the area inside the outline.
Fit with barsThe picture covers 32% of the frame; the rest is bars.

How to calculate an aspect ratio

An aspect ratio is a picture's width compared with its height, written width:height. To get it from a size, divide both sides by their greatest common divisor: 1920 and 1080 both divide by 120, so 1920×1080 is 16:9.

To find a missing side, multiply: height = width × (ratio height ÷ ratio width). A 9:16 video 1080 pixels wide is 1080 × 16 ÷ 9 = 1920 pixels tall. Going the other way, width = height × (ratio width ÷ ratio height).

Some sizes don't simplify neatly. 1080×566 reduces to 540:283, which is about 1.91:1, the shape Instagram uses for landscape posts. The calculator shows the exact ratio and the closest common one.

Video sizes for TikTok, Instagram and YouTube

PlatformSizeRatioLength
TikTok1080×19209:16Recording: up to 10 minutes; uploads: set per account
Instagram Reels1080×19209:16Up to 20 minutes (3 to reach non-followers)
Instagram Stories1080×19209:16Up to 60 seconds per story video

YouTube Shorts1080×19209:16 or 1:1Up to 3 minutes
YouTube1920×108016:9–

Every platform here plays vertical video full screen at 9:16, so one 1080×1920 export covers TikTok, Reels, Shorts and Stories. Feed posts are the exception: 4:5 takes up more of the Instagram feed than 9:16, which gets cropped there.

How to use Aspect ratio calculator

  1. 1

    Pick a ratio

Tap a common ratio such as 9:16 or 16:9, type your own, or drag the corner of the preview until the shape looks right.

  2. 2

    Type one side

Enter a width or a height and the other side is solved for you. Turn off "Keep the ratio" and type both sides to find the ratio of any size.

  3. 3

    Check the crop

Pick your clip's shape, or drop the file in, to see how much of the picture survives a crop and how big the bars are if you fit it instead.

FAQ

Aspect ratio calculator FAQ

How do you calculate an aspect ratio?

Divide the width and the height by their greatest common divisor. 1920×1080: both divide by 120, giving 16:9. To find a missing side, height = width × (ratio height ÷ ratio width), so 1080 wide at 9:16 is 1080 × 16 ÷ 9 = 1920 tall.

What aspect ratio is 1920×1080?

16:9, the standard widescreen shape used by YouTube, TVs and laptops. Turned on its side, 1080×1920 is 9:16, the vertical shape of TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

What aspect ratio should I use for TikTok, Reels and Shorts?

9:16 at 1080×1920 pixels. All three fill the phone screen with it. Instagram's feed also takes 4:5 (1080×1350), which shows bigger in the feed but gets cropped in Reels.

What happens when I put a 16:9 video into a 9:16 frame?

You either crop it or fit it. Cropping to fill the frame keeps only the middle 32% of the picture's width. Fitting the whole picture leaves it covering 32% of the frame, with bars above and below.

Why should video sizes be even numbers?

Most video encoders, including H.264, store colour at half resolution and need even widths and heights. The calculator warns you when a side is odd and suggests the nearest even size.

Is my photo or video uploaded when I drop it in?

No. Your browser reads the file's width, height and length on your device. Nothing is sent to UGCLive or anyone else, and the file is gone when you close the tab.
