Reels, Stories and feed posts in one video

Reels and Stories both play full screen at 9:16, so one 1080×1920 video works for both. Feed posts are where shapes differ: Instagram accepts 4:5 to 1.91:1, and 4:5 is the tallest, so it takes the most room as people scroll.

A 9:16 reel is shown cropped in two places: in the feed, and on your profile grid, which shows each post as a 3:4 tile. Keep faces, products and on-screen text near the middle of the frame and the reel reads well in all three. Cropping a 16:9 clip into 9:16 keeps about a third of its width; the preview above shows exactly what survives.

The same 1080×1920 export fits TikTok and YouTube Shorts too.

FAQ

Instagram Reels size FAQ

What size is an Instagram reel?

1080×1920 pixels at 9:16. Instagram recommends 9:16 to avoid cropping or blank space, and asks for at least 720 pixels and 30 fps.

What aspect ratio is an Instagram reel?

9:16. Instagram accepts reels from 1.91:1 to 9:16, but anything other than 9:16 is shown with bars or cropped in the Reels tab.

What is the Instagram Story aspect ratio?

9:16, the same 1080×1920 frame as Reels. A story video posted by another app can be up to 60 seconds long.

What aspect ratio is an Instagram feed post?

Anything from 4:5 to 1.91:1. 4:5 portrait (1080×1350) takes up the most room in the feed; 1:1 (1080×1080) and 1.91:1 landscape (1080×566) also work.

How long can an Instagram reel be?

Up to 20 minutes in the app. Reels over 3 minutes aren't recommended to people who don't follow you, so keep reels meant to reach new people at 3 minutes or less. Apps that post for you are capped at 15 minutes and 300 MB.

Why does my reel look cropped on my profile?

Your profile grid shows each post as a 3:4 tile, so the top and bottom of a 9:16 reel are cut off there. Keep faces and text near the middle; the reel itself still plays full screen.
