What is the Instagram Reels safe zone?
The Instagram Reels safe zone is the part of a 9:16 Reel that Instagram's buttons and caption don't cover. Meta's guidance for Reels ads is to leave roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side free of text and logos: about 269 px, 672 px and 65 px on a 1080 × 1920 Reel.
The side margin isn't for a button: phones taller than 9:16 crop the sides of the video to fill the screen, so text tight to the edge can be cut.
What covers your video on Instagram Reels
- Top: the Reels title and the camera button.
- Right side: like, comment, share and more, with the audio thumbnail at the bottom of the column.
- Bottom: your profile picture, username and Follow button, the first lines of the caption and the audio name.
- On ads: a button such as Learn more or Shop now above the caption.
- Very bottom: Instagram's tab bar.

Instagram Reels: Meta: leave roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side free of text and logos.
These figures are approximate. They come from each platform's published ad specs, checked on 2026-10-13; the apps change their layouts, captions vary in length and phones differ in shape, so check a real post before you deliver. The grey shapes in the checker are a rough drawing of each app, not a published spec.
Why the safe zone matters for UGC ads and TikTok Shop videos
- Reels shows the first lines of your caption over the video, so burned-in captions in the bottom third are hidden behind it.
- Meta's Reels ads add a call-to-action button in the same area; a discount code or price there is covered.
- The same Reel can run as an ad on Instagram and Facebook Reels. Meta uses the same 14/35/6 guidance for both, so one placement works for both.
Tips for placing text on Instagram Reels
- Keep the hook below about 269 px so the Reels header doesn't cover it.
- Put burned-in captions so their bottom edge stays above about 1248 px.
- Leave 65 px on each side for taller phones, and keep important things out of the right edge in the lower half, where the buttons are.
- If you also post the video as a Story, the Reels margins work there too.

FAQInstagram Reels Safe Zone FAQ
What is the Instagram Reels safe zone?
Meta's guidance is to leave roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text and logos. On a 1080 × 1920 Reel that's about 269 px, 672 px and 65 px.
What covers the bottom of a Reel?
Your profile picture, username and Follow button, the caption, the audio name and, on ads, a button such as Learn more or Shop now. The like, comment and share buttons run down the right side.
Is the Meta Reels safe zone the same on Facebook?
Meta gives the same 14% top, 35% bottom and 6% side guidance for Reels ads, so one 1080 × 1920 video placed this way works on Instagram and Facebook Reels.
Where can I get an Instagram Reels safe zone template?
Choose Reels above and press Download for a transparent 1080 × 1920 PNG. Lay it over your edit while you place text, then hide it before exporting.
Why the 6% on the sides?
Phones taller than 9:16 crop the sides of the video to fill the screen, so text right at the edge can be cut off.
Are these numbers exact?
They're from Meta's Ads Guide, checked on 2026-10-13, and Meta calls them rough. The app changes, so check a real post.
