How long can YouTube Shorts be?
Up to 3 minutes. YouTube counts any video uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 as a Short when it's square or vertical and 3 minutes or shorter. Videos uploaded before that date that run past a minute stay regular long-form videos.
Shape decides it as much as length: a 16:9 video is always a regular video, even at 20 seconds. To post a horizontal clip as a Short, crop it to 9:16 or 1:1 first. To cut several Shorts out of one long video, a clipping tool finds and crops the moments; Opus Clip and its rivals are compared on cost per minute.
Regular YouTube video sizes
Regular YouTube videos are 16:9. These are YouTube's recommended sizes; 1920×1080 is the usual choice.

Making both from one shoot? Film vertically for Shorts, TikTok and Reels, or leave room around the subject in a 16:9 shot so a 9:16 crop still holds it.
